Memoriam Funds at IIB

The Dukakis Immigrant Assistance Fund
The Euterpe Boukis Dukakis Immigrant Assistance Fund has been established in loving memory of Euterpe Boukis Dukakis, a Greek immigrant and special friend of the International Institute of Boston. As a Greek immigrant herself, Ms. Dukakis was one of the first women in her community to receive a college education. Ms. Dukakis went on to become a teacher and through her lifetime imbued her family with the drive to become active contributors to the community.

This fund will support the International Institute’s legal clinic and citizenship center, which helps thousands of refugees, asylum seekers, and immigrants each year. Thousands of our clients are faced with unjust deportation or need assistance when applying for permanent residence or citizenship. Others seek to bring their loved ones to the United States or are victims of domestic violence and are seeking support as self-petitioners. This fund will provide legal representation and consultation for refugees, asylum seekers, and immigrants who seek to rebuild their lives in the United States.

The Kirsten Shanks Fund
The Kirsten Shanks Fund has been created in memory of Kirsten Shanks, an exceptional teacher who instilled hundreds of immigrants and refugees with the skills and confidence to successfully obtain positions in the hospitality industry. As a teacher and job coach, Kirsten built IIB’s Hospitality Industry Training Program, which prepares clients for hospitality positions through classroom instruction and job shadowing opportunities. Her personal, entertaining stories both elucidated the challenges of customer service and inspired her students as they pursued, in most cases, their first secure positions in Boston. Her laughter, positive attitude, and extraordinary wit endeared clients and staff alike. The Kirsten Shanks Fund will help immigrants and refugees to take their first steps toward a secure future for themselves and their families.

The Richard Miller Fund
IIB has established the Richard Miller Refugee Fund in memory of Richard Miller. Richard worked for over 15 years at IIB to help refugees from around the world establish themselves in this country. Tirelessly, he helped refugees find housing, obtain employment, and overcome the numerous challenges involved in resettling into a new community. He helped waves of refugees, many of whom came from Cambodia, Cuba, Ethiopia and Vietnam.

This fund will assist in meeting the immediate needs of refugees during their first months in this country. This fund is being created to reflect Richard Miller's compassionate spirit and unflagging commitment to refugees and their families.
