In 1917, two Greek immigrants opened The Puritan Candy Store and
Ice Cream Parlor in downtown Manchester. By 1919, it was a full service
restaurant. Ninety years later, the restaurant and its generations of Pappas and Canotas family members and tens of thousands of
employees past and present have built a business dedicated to community
service – a stunning legacy unparalleled in New Hampshire. We invite you and your family to be part of this story as the International Institute, with its own legacy of support of Manchester’s immigrant
population, honors the Pappas and Canotas with a Golden Door Award, the Institute’s highest honor.
The International Institute, founded in 1924, assists over 7,000 immigrants and refugees annually with services that are tailored to
meet the individual needs of its clients. It provides refugee resettlement
support, legal support, treatment for survivors of torture, employment training, literacy instruction, and economic development
and microfinance programs.
